Saturday morning cartoons, an experiment

8:03am - Wake up and report to the living room. 8:05am - Remote in hand, spinning channels... The only thing on is what appears to be Curious George on UNCTV (PBS to the rest of you) 8:07am - I renege on the 'no computer' thing, sitting down to move files from the old computer to the new one, while I turn to the TV Guide Channel to see what time some real cartoons come on. 8:14am - The only channels showing ANYTHING other than the above mentioned Curious George -- if not news or paid programming -- are Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and the cartoon network... I do not see myself watching Fairly OddParents, Max & Ruby, or Ben 10 Alien Force, so this experiment is drawn to a close quickly. 8:20am - I turn to SportsCenter... Epic phail. 8:30am - fuck that too, I am going to work on my project. This blog entry was dreamed up as a chance for me to go behind enemy lines, so to speak, and see what it is the kids have available to watch on Saturday mornings. Driven by memories of wak

One day I woke up...

... and asked myself "what in the hell ever happened to Saturday morning cartoons?" That day, lady and gentleman, was TODAY! I decided that tomorrow morning, I will get my black ass out the bed, forgo the computer and cooked breakfast for a change, instead opting for a bowl of chocolate Cheerios (try these motherfuckers, for real!) and report on my findings. I am not exactly expecting anything spectacular, but I do wanna try, at least to say I did something. Notes and reports on my findings in the morning.

What DO I like?

You know? After how I went in on KRS-ONE , Jay Z , my ongoing discussions of hip hop in general , and my less than a handful of album reviews , I could imagine it being difficult for one to put a finger on just what in the hell in hip hop I DO like. I mean, it goes without saying that my loyalties lie in the 90s as far as this hip hop shit goes, perusal of what falls under the above links will tell one that... On an escape from my desk for 10-15ish minutes to test this bluetooth headset I have, I walked around and scrolled through the music in my phone. It hit me that my ringtone is a DJ Quik song, "Quik's Groove V" from 2000's Balance and Options . Scrolling through, I realized how much of (meaning damn near most of) the music contained in the phone for random listening at various times were actually Quik songs. [ Phlip note - I REALLY should have written this blog Monday, on his birthday... Oh well] It says here that Quik's first album came out in 1991 -- a fac

In the movies with Phlip -- The Book of Eli

Yes, I have been to the movies more in the 15+ months I have been with The Katie than I did in all of the 5 years prior. That being said, my mind was made when we went to see Sherlock Holmes a couple weeks ago that the next movie we would see would be The Book of Eli . Those that know me know that I am a homer for Denzel Washington and Samuel L Jackson movies. This movie stars Denzel in a role that is absou-fucking-lutely DYNAMIC. I mean that in that the idea of what it is he is in this movie changes with the goings on in the movie. The movie starts in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic United States with some ass-kicking and killage, so I was all for this one. Sure, there was some gore and I am more than sure that the hair up PETA's ass will be inflamed and will become a boil for what happened here. We have Denzel protecting a book as he makes a journey -- driven by faith -- to "the west" on what is revealed to be a mission from God. To avoid fucking the story up for

Rap = The New Special Olympics

Ooh look, I am about to piss some people off, ain't I? Well stick with me, here... See, in the special Olympics I am to understand that there are no 'losers' and that everyone gets a medal. In today's hip hop climate, there are no losers, per se, in that no one is actually 'winning' in the same manner that they might have just 5 short(ish) years ago... I had to refer to my 2005 hip hop post to make sure, here, but it seems to me that was among the last years that good music sold (for the most part), and shitty music didn't get a second look, at least critically. [ Phlip note - because damned if you motherfuckers were BUYING anything... Looking at the post, this was about the year that even I, an avid collector, finally lost faith and stopped buying shit] Anyway, back to the task at hand... Hip hop and the special Olympics... I am not going to sully this post with a perusal of the billboard top 200 chart, because no one is buying hip hop these days anyway.

Next step will be when I get that phone call advising me to come on to High Point to take her from white to blue. Can't wait!!!

When keeping it real goes wrong -- the Gilbert Arenas files

Look, I know this shit happened on New Year's Day, but I was alternating hungover, shopping in Charlotte and then drunk all over again that day, so I did not get to it until like Monday, I think... A friend reached out to me last night to check and make sure I wasn't cutting my wrists or anything, what with not having posted yet this year. I explained what I had been up to since the holidays and promised new posts soon. Working on a project. A week prior to the new year, it was revealed that Gilbert had admitted to having brought a loaded pistol into the locker room at the arena on more than one occasion. The reason? "I have an young son in the house and wouldn't want that around him" I saw where this was going right then... It says here that Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr. signed a $111,000,000 (that is 111 million for those keeping score at home) 6-year contract in July of 2008. Noteworthy is that he was coming out of a season where he had missed 9 games due to injury. T

2009, let's shut this motherf*cker down

You know what? 2009 has been an all around not-so-great year, but I am thankful to have made it to the other side in a better position to take on the next than that which I entered this one in. I came into the year still mad at the world with the NC Dept. of Revenue up my ass with quite an amount of time ahead of me at the time of that posting before I would see it resolved. -except- It was apparently obvious that I was right and they were wrong, I was just apparently in wait for something to take place, evidenced by my very next post . Yes, resolution had taken place in between my phonecall and posts, putting me in a better place, in that my wages were no longer being garnished and that I would be getting a decent amount of cash back for my troubles. I would begin receiving that right in time for my annual Atlanta trip at the end of April/early May. A weekend of motherfucking monsoons and a clear picture of what a breaking/broken phone (Murph's, not mine) can do to take what is c

2009 in hip hop review.

Okay, following the advice of a few of my readers and my own idea presented for solicitation of such advice, I waited until year's end (or until the last Tuesday of the month year, so no more music is releasing) and I will NOW make my 2009 post for the time capsule that is the internets... Let us understand that by the time you read this, 10 of the 12 months' releases will have been filled in, but as I TYPE this, I am expecting the ugliest of clusterfucks. I base this SOLELY on what I recall having been released to this point in the year (10/26/2009, 8:42am EST). To be totally honest, I am describable as angered right now just thinking about it, but I will let it ride. I committed to the project, so I will do it to completion. January We get the not-so-good-soundtrack to a not-so-good movie, Notorious . I won't even get into why I didn't see the movie, but know that it has a lot to do with the fact that it featured people portraying people who were NOT dead in the movie

In the movies with Phlip -- Sherlock Holmes (no spoilers, I promise)

I don't know that I will be doing this every time that The Katie and I go to the movies, which it seems I have done more of this year than many before it, but I am compelled to talk about this. I also led into an album review post I made with a similar disclaimer, but have since done another drop or 3 reviewing albums that interested me for whatever reason at the respective times. That ALMOST led to me discussing my disappointment with Alicia Keys' album last weekend. This is not about that. Went to see Sherlock Holmes yesterday afternoon. Now, as a fan of Guy Richie movies and a within-the-last-few-years rediscovered fan of Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder anyone?), my hopes coming into this were quite high, and I will concede that my opinion of the film may have been swayed by such. Look, I am a reader and a writer, very much of both, but I have NEVER read the Sherlock Holmes novels, so there is nothing to ruin here. I understand that the movie is an amalgamation of differen
