Hotep Hollywood... Fear of a Black Westeros

Image
Hollywood hates us.  Seriously, Hollywood is a passively-declared, but aggressively-behaved enemy of the Ankh-Right.  Scroll through your social media timelines; the hot item of the moment is Game of Thrones.  If you haven’t noticed yet, GoT suffers from a debilitating lack of color.  Apologists want to say that it is due to the fact that the basis for Westeros is Medieval Europe, but we will storm right through that logic red light and blame it on MORE racism in Hollywood. We get Salladhor Saan as a pirate and sellsail, both SUPREMELY enviable professions in a fantasy tale of kings and queens, right?  He gets himself into three episodes over three seasons and is eventually reduced to a joke and sent the fuck on his way in exchange for some gold and leaves his pride behind. Hell, at least they let him live. Xaro Hhoan Daxos gets himself into five episodes in season two.  An exiled self-proclaimed King, he epitomizes the Cocky Negro™ that Hollywood lives to remind us

Phood Phun with Phlip - Fancy Vinegar Chicken & Creamed Greens

Image
Fun surprise this week…  Pork! Look, I read the title, heck I WROTE the title.  I know it says chicken, but the fooder around these parts wanted some swine tonight, so she made a dual dish including both chicken and pork tenderloin. Let’s get to business here.  This will be quite simple, and will require you plan a full day ahead. First, you will need (not pictured): 1lb of boneless/skinless chicken breast (or pork tenderloin) 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 3/4 cup red wine  vinaigrette 1tbsp minced garlic Marinate the meat in the above ingredients overnight. Brown them in a lightly oiled pan but do not cook them all of the way through. Pull from the heat and bake at 350 until internal temp of 160/165 (chicken/pork, respectively) And that is IT! Give it a few minutes to rest, and slice. A few minutes to rest?  Yeah…  about that. You should have sliced your zucchini long-way and can sauté it in the meat leavins that remain in the pa

Writing About Writing Vol 4

Image
“Voice” As I learned – or, more accurately, willed myself – to write, I used to hear/read things about “voice” in writing. As I look back over my old writing, I think I understand more clearly what was meant by "voice." [ Phlip note : I HATE some of my old work] What I have observed over the past year or so, though, I have watched my work evolve.  What started as a 150-300 word blurb on my FaceBook wall has grown to an every-Thursday event that both of you VERY much look forward to. The growth has come with some evolution in my presentation and not just with the addition of a leading picture to each of the posts.  I had to learn to structure them physically to help each reader make their own adventure of it. What does that even mean? It means that I use indentation to start certain paragraphs, and not in others.  The indentation is to begin a new though, the lack of it means I have not finished that last idea yet but need the separation that simply putt

My Own Worst Enemy

Image
I imagine this is a common assessment for every person of themselves, but I am my own worst enemy sometimes.  My short term memory leaves much to be desired, but my eye and ear for details of mundane shit that happened a long time ago are A-1.  That often leaves me a prisoner to my own mind, to my habits – past and present at that.      I also have a hard time forgiving myself for shit that I have done or have been blamed for, or at worst have been allowed to believe took place on my watch. Ever laid awake and listen to your brain quoting shit you should have done differently and then chide you for not doing it differently?  I call those Tuesdays. … and Wednesdays. …  or, fuck, any day that ends in Y.      It may seem that I spend a lot of time on what I’ve done wrong and God knows I do as well as I do that this is true.  I surely don’t want to, but it just is.  I don’t take compliments well because I am still so stuck on my opportunities for improvement.
